The association of Small Luxury Hotels of the World has announced the first new additions and openings in 2021. The spectrum ranges from small boutique hotels in old, beautifully restored villas and palaces in Italy, on Mallorca and Ibiza to dreamlike hideaways on the beaches of Zanzibar, Cambodia and Thailand. We briefly introduce the eight most exciting establishments.
Can Ferrereta
The Can Ferrereta is a luxury boutique hotel opening in April in the old town of Santanyí in south-east Mallorca. 32 rooms and suites have been created in a carefully restored 17th-century mansion. A 25-metre pool surrounded by flowering gardens, a spa with indoor pool, fitness room, sauna and haman, as well as a bar and two restaurants serving Mediterranean cuisine round off the facilities. Castello di Reschio
Until now, Castello di Reschio in the hills of Umbria was only known for its exquisite villas. Now, in April 2021, a boutique hotel of the same name with 36 rooms and suites will open within the old castle walls dating back to the 10th century. Guests can look forward to a wonderful spa area in the former wine cellar, a farm-to-table restaurant, a bar and a pool. The Castello di Reschio, which is surrounded by 3,700 hectares of pastureland, also includes an organic farm with 5,000 olive trees.
Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa
The Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa in Menaggio will celebrate its reopening in March as the newest five-star hotel on Lake Como after a comprehensive renovation. In a neoclassical villa from the 19th century and a modern extension, 81 rooms and suites await. A heated outdoor pool in the inner courtyard, a spa with indoor pool, sauna and steam bath are part of the hotel as well as two bars, a gourmet restaurant and a veranda restaurant with a view over the lake. Only a road with little traffic separates the Grand Hotel Victoria from the lake itself.
Villa Soligo
The Hotel Villa Soligo is located in the former summer hunting lodge of the Counts of Brandolini in Farra di Soligo in Veneto – in the middle of the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Following the restoration of the 18th century manor house, 30 individually designed rooms and suites are available here. Guests can relax in the beautiful parkland, with a cocktail by the pool or in the spa. Dogs are welcome here, by the way.
La Torre del Canonigo
Located high up in Ibiza’s fortified old town, the boutique hotel La Torre del Canónigo consists of three 16th-century buildings connected by a terrace. The 26 rooms present a modern style with unplastered stone walls, terracotta floors and velvet fabrics. The pool next to the roof terrace offers views over the harbour and the sea. The restaurant serves a mix of Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine. Afterwards, people meet at the bar before heading down to the city.
Amani Boutique Hotel Zanzibar
The Amani Boutique Hotel is an intimate retreat right on Paje Beach – one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island of Zanzibar. The 14 individually designed rooms are furnished with hand-carved mirrors and traditional textiles, and decorated in light and airy colours. The private balconies overlook the gardens or the sea. Guests spend their days between the pool and the sea or between the sea and the pool. Then in the evening, a variety of Zanzibar specialities are served in the restaurant – just a few steps from the shore.
Koh Russey Villas & Resort
This new addition to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World can only be reached by speedboat. That’s because Koh Russey Villas & Resort is located on a small island off the coast of Cambodia. The secluded retreat consists of 50 luxurious pavilions and 13 villas with private pools. A 1.2-kilometre private beach, two restaurants, a beach bar, a spa, an infinity pool on the beach, a gym open around the clock and a yoga studio make the stay perfect. By the way, Koh Russey Island is hardly more than a mile wide…
Vala Hua Hin
The beach is the focus of Vala Hua Hin, located between Hua Hin and Cha-Am on the coast of Thailand. Nevertheless, in addition to 84 deluxe rooms and suites, the modern five-star resort also has 13 beach villas with private pools. An all-day dining restaurant, a café, two bars, a massage pavilion, a family pool and the “Wonder Wood Playground” for the youngest guests round off the facilities. The Vala Hua Hin also has an organic farm, which is open for visits at any time.
