Record flight

Non-stop from Vienna to Sydney: Austrian Airlines operates record flight

Due to the large number of travel restrictions worldwide, there are more and more exceptional flights. On 30 March, an Austrian Airlines plane landed in Australia for the first time in 17 years. The aircraft touched down in Vienna after about 17 hours non-stop flight. The Boeing 777-200ER with the registration OE-LPD broke a record: With a distance of 9,918 miles or 15,961 kilometers, it was the longest flight Austrian Airlines has ever completed.

For comparison: Even the longest regular scheduled flight in the world between Singapore and New York Newark and the recent record flight from Papeete, Tahiti, to Paris (we reported here) are around 400 and 150 miles shorter. The fact that Austrian Airlines was able to cover this route with a Boeing 777-200ER, was due to the hardly existing loading which is:  there were only 17 people and hardly any luggage on board, including 4 pilots. Flights to the east can also use the jet streams.

On the return flight, a fuel stop will be made in Penang, Malaysia.
