To the hotel by dog sled: New airport for Sweden’s largest ski area

In the Dalarna region in the north of Sweden, a new airport has opened near the border with Norway: The Scandinavian Mountains Airport with the IATA airport code SCR is also known as “Sälen Trysil Airport” and is designed to make traveling to the popular Sälen ski area and Trysil easy in neighboring Norway. The property is owned by 33 local companies.

Sälen, Idre and Kläppen form Sweden’s largest winter sports region with a total of 254 slopes, 157 lifts, more than 100 restaurants and 100,000 beds in hotels, apartments and cottages. Trysil is the largest Norwegian ski area. Additional activities such as snowshoeing and snowmobile rides enable a varied winter holiday.

The airlines BRA and SAS currently serve the small airport in the north of Sweden twelve times a week: BRA flies with ATR 72-500 or ATR 72-600 from Stockholm Bromma, Malmö, Ängelholm, Göteborg and Växjö and SAS with Airbus A320neo from London, Copenhagen and Aalborg. Traveling from Germany, Austria and Switzerland is particularly easy via Copenhagen.

Buses and rental cars are available for transfers to the hotels. If you are looking for the ultimate winter experience, you can also book a dog sled that ten Alaskan huskies pull through the snow. The journey takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on the hotel. The fare is the equivalent of EUR 460 per sled for up to four people. By bus, transfer times to Sälen are 10 to 25 minutes and to Trysil 40 minutes.
