The island of lightness: New design for the Maldives resort Finolhu

The Seaside Collection has used the time of the shutdown to completely redesign their resort in the Maldives. Since the beginning of November the Finolhu in the UNESCO protected Baa Atoll is now open again. Guests can choose from 125 villas on land and water, more than half of which have their own pool.

The London design office Muza Lab was commissioned to design the villas, restaurants and spa. The result is a kaleidoscope of patterns and colors – with the blue tones of the sea, the purple, pink and apricot of the sun and the green of tropical island plants.

Artisans from various countries have created unique objects: mouth-blown glass from Turkey, chandeliers and wickerwork from South Africa and wood art from Java are just a few examples. A newly designed jetty connects the water villas and the island garden was embellished with native grasses and plants. “Finolhu has always been a special resort, now it is a paradise”, says General Manager Marc Reader.

In the national language of the Maldives, “Finolhu” means “sandbank” – and indeed Finolhu, with its four islands and miles of sandy beaches, is the most extensive resort in the entire Baa Atoll. Four restaurants serve the best from the ocean every day. In addition, the finest cocktails are mixed at the bar in the evening, while the in-house DJ provides a relaxed lounge atmosphere by the pool.

The Finolhu opened in 2016 and was taken over by the Hamburg-based Seaside Collection in 2019. Since the beginning of 2020, the resort has been a member of Design Hotels. It can be reached via the new Baa Atoll Airport or in about 30 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Rates currently start at EUR 451 per night with breakfast in a Beach Villa and EUR 679 in a Beach Pool Villa – excluding taxes and fees in each case.
