New Autograph Collection boutique hotel opens in Tuscany

A new boutique hotel of the Marriott brand “Autograph Collection” has opened in the historic old town of Lucca in Tuscany: The Grand Universe Lucca is located in a 16th century palace that originally belonged to the Paoli family and has now been extensively renovated at a cost of several million euros – including the wall foundations from Roman times.

As early as 1857, the legendary Hotel Universo e Tosca was opened in this house, which quickly established itself as a popular destination for kings, poets, philosophers and artists. The Lucca-born composer Giacomo Puccini also liked to stay here between his performances at the Teatro del Giglio. A suite was named after him.

The design of the 46 rooms and nine suites combines the historical atmosphere of the palace with contemporary elements. Silk and velvet textiles in “grape red”, “pine green” and “Tuscan sunshine yellow” reflect the heritage of silk production in Lucca. Tapestries depict the region’s vineyards, while pendant lights celebrate the history of the glassblowing workshop that was once based in the cellar of what is now the Grand Universe Lucca.

The hotel’s gastronomic facilities include the traditional Italian restaurant “Legacy”, the piano lounge “Symphony” and the rooftop bar “Sommita”. In the wine cellar “Eterno”, guests can participate in private wine tastings with a focus on Tuscan appellations against a backdrop of ancient artefacts. Other culinary experiences include private cocktail classes with the head mixologist, pasta workshops as well as honey and olive oil tastings.

The Grand Universe Lucca overlooks Piazza del Giglio and Piazza Napoleone – a popular artists’ meeting place where the “Lucca Summer Festival” takes place every year. Lucca’s most famous sights – such as the Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Reparata and the Teatro del Giglio – are just a few minutes’ walk away. Upon request, guests of the boutique hotel can also explore one of Tuscany’s most beautiful cities on a rental bicycle. The first 60 minutes are free of charge.
