Mandarin Oriental takes over Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi

Kempinski is losing the famous Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group will take over the management of the luxury hotel on 01 January 2020 and will therefore be represented with two hotels in the United Arab Emirates after the opening of the Mandarin Oriental Jumeira in Dubai in early 2019.

First of all, extensive renovation work is planned, which is to be carried out with ongoing operations over the next two years: the rooms, suites and leisure facilities will be modernized and the range of restaurants will be redesigned. The company will only be renamed “Mandarin Oriental” after the work has been completed.

The Emirates Palace is located on a 1.3 kilometer long private beach in Abu Dhabi and comprises 394 rooms and suites, twelve restaurants and bars, 40 conference rooms, an auditorium and a ballroom for up to 2,500 people. Leisure facilities include a marina, two pools, a spa and two fitness centers. It is owned by the Emirates Palace Company – a subsidiary of the government of Abu Dhabi.

Kempinski has run the palace hotel since it opened in 2005. In October, however, it was clear that the owner and hotel company would not agree to an extension of the management contract – much to the delight of James Riley, Group Chief Executive of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group: “It is a unique opportunity to operate one of the most prestigious properties in the Middle East. It is an excellent addition to our portfolio in the region, ”he is quoted in a press release.
