Emirates flies from Dubai via Barcelona to Mexico City – Boeing 777-200LR

Emirates now flies daily from Dubai via Barcelona to Mexico City. The new connection is particularly interesting because the airline has been granted the rights under the so-called “fifth freedom”. That means: In addition to the entire route, the Emirates flights between Dubai and Barcelona and between Barcelona and Mexico City can also be booked.

Fifth Freedom is part of a total of nine freedoms in the air. It means that an airline may make a stop in country B on a flight from home country A to country C and may only carry passengers between A and B or between B and C. However, this requires permits from the individual countries, which are rarely available.

The new route is operated with a Boeing 777-200LR. Emirates has ten aircraft of this type that have been equipped with a completely new cabin. In Business Class, 38 seats are available in a 2-2-2 configuration, which are around five centimeters wider than before. The 264 seats in Economy Class are also new.

In principle, Emirates could also manage the approximately 9,100 miles between Dubai and Mexico City non-stop. However, because the Mexican capital is 2,250 meters above sea level, this is not possible: the take-off power of the aircraft is significantly reduced at this altitude. You can therefore not carry as much fuel with you. With the “Fifth Freedom” a stopover makes more sense anyway.
