Castello di Reschio: New boutique hotel in an old castle in Umbria

Until now, the Castello di Reschio in the hills of Umbria was known only for its exquisite villas. Now, on the 21st of April 2021, a boutique hotel of the same name with 36 rooms and suites will open in the old castle walls dating back to the 10th century, the likes of which have rarely been seen even in Italy. An incredibly beautiful spa area in the former wine cellar, a “farm-to-table” restaurant, a bar, a pool and enchanting rooms for concerts and events complete the offer.

Count Antonio Bolza bought the Castello di Reschio in 1994 to breathe new life into the 1,500 hectare estate in a forgotten area between Perugia and Siena. Since then his son – the renowned architect Benedict Bolza – and his wife Nencia have restored more than half of the medieval farmhouses scattered around the estate and transformed them into villas for new owners. Ten of them are also rented to guests.

The “Ristorante Alle Scuderie”, which will open in the summer of 2019, marked another milestone in the development of the Castello di Reschio – as did the 40 Andalusian horses, which come from one of the best studs in Spain and have found a new home in the recently built riding and stable complex. Now, with the transformation of the castle into a boutique hotel, the most ambitious restoration project to date is almost complete.

Hiking, tennis, cooking classes, olive oil workshops, clay pigeon shooting, hunting and fishing are just some of the activities offered at the Castello di Reschio. But the focus is of course on the pleasure of riding – from riding lessons to vaulting for children to rides on the estate. In summer, weekly dressage demonstrations are also held. The cities of Assisi, Arezzo, Siena, Cortona and Perugia are about an hour away by car.
