American Express releases FAQs on insurance protection for travel warnings

American Express has now issued an FAQ PDF for American Express credit cards issued in Germany or Austria. This is to clarify the questions that most travelers ask themselves regarding insurance cover. We have briefly cited the most important points below, even if there are still some unclear points.

  • With active travel warnings, there is no insurance cover with regard to American Express travel insurance. In Germany and Austria, all worldwide trips are currently affected.

Basically, the travel insurance included in your American Express card only applies in the event of illness, accident or death. In addition, some American Express cards require insurance payment for travel with American Express. Please compare your insurance conditions.

Please also note that due to the current general travel warning from the Federal Foreign Office, there is generally no insurance cover for trips that were / are booked after 17 March 2020. Before making future travel bookings, you should definitely check to what extent travel warnings still exist.

  • However, it seems that there is protection for medical costs abroad in the event of illness. Unfortunately, it is not clear whether this only applies if you have already traveled before becoming aware of the travel warning.

Am I entitled for insurance coverage if I get the Corona virus on vacation?

If you fall ill during your vacation, your insurance cover will cover your medical costs abroad – provided you have a valid travel health insurance abroad. In this case, please dial the number on the back of your card. Medical emergency assistance from AXA Assistance is available around the clock.
