Aman Kyoto: New luxury resort in Japan’s old imperial city

Aman opened its third luxury resort in Japan on 1 November 2019: Aman Kyoto is set in a secluded garden in the middle of a 32-hectare forest with moss-covered rocks, rippling streams, winding paths and many old cedars, cypress and maple trees. Nevertheless, the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinkaku-ji is only a few minutes walk away.

The 26 minimalist rooms and suites are spread over six pavilions and are a contemporary homage to the traditional Japanese Ryokan guesthouse. The floor-to-ceiling windows frame the spectacular nature, while Tatami mats on the floors and Tokonoma niches set subtle accents with small works of art. All the furniture – including the typical Japanese lanterns – is exclusive and customized.

The natural spring water that flows under Aman Kyoto and is a rarity in the region plays a central role in the Aman Spa: traditional Onsen baths offer relaxation and healing in their purest form. At the same time, Japan’s rich natural pharmacy is used: green Kyoto tea, Tamba kuromame, local sake, and cold-pressed Tsubaki oil. Zazen meditation, acupuncture, shiatsu, and moxa are also included in the program.

The “Living Pavilion by Aman” with its central fireplace and terrace serves Kyoto style food and innovative Western dishes. The Japanese restaurant “Taka-an” invites you to experience the Japanese art of hospitality, in which every element – atmosphere, design, and cuisine – work together harmoniously and in perfect balance.

The hidden gardens of Aman Kyoto serve as a starting point for discovering the many mysterious corners of the ancient imperial capital of Japan. The luxury resort is surrounded by no less than 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The resort also offers privileged access to a wealth of temples and other cultural sites inaccessible to most travelers.
