Hotel Reopening

After three years of renovation, the Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid is about to reopen

After the most extensive renovation in the 110-year history of the legendary hotel, the Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid will open its doors again next spring. Reservations can already be made now for stays starting on the 15th of March 2021 – just as celebrities like Ernest Hemingway, Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly, Haile Selassie, Mata Hari, Ava Gardner, Michelle Pfeiffer and Madonna once did.

In 2015, Mandarin Oriental had acquired the hotel, originally opened in 1910, from Belmond together with the Olayan Group from Saudi Arabia. The selling price was USD 148 million. In 2018, renovation work began, which would take three years and cost more than USD 100 million.

The Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz and the French designer duo Gilles & Boissier created a spectacular new design for the interiors, while the very special Belle Époque character of the original buildings by César Ritz was retained in all its glory. A number of valuable works of art from the hotel collection – such as crystal chandeliers, antique paintings and sculptures – were included in the redesign.

The Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid now has 103 rooms and 53 suites. These include two suites in the towers on the top floors as well as a Royal Suite and a Presidential Suite with a view of the Museo Nacional del Prado. The ballroom and function rooms also offer this view. They have been restored to their former glory and are now expected to help restore the hotel to its position as a desirable venue for weddings, private dinners and celebrations.

The five restaurants and bars, run by Spanish star chef Quique Dacosta, include a gourmet restaurant overlooking the hotel’s famous garden and a restaurant in the historic Palm Court with its characteristic glass roof, which will be open for the first time in more than 80 years. The new wellness area includes an indoor pool, a vitality pool, experience showers, a steam sauna and a fitness center.
