146 of the 156 resorts in the Maldives will be open by the end of October 2020

Since 15 July 2020, the Maldives have opened their borders to international tourism – and most resorts are gradually celebrating their reopening: By the end of October 2020, 146 of the 156 island resorts will be welcoming guests again.

Already in July 43 resorts welcomed the first guests from all over the world – for example Lily Beach Maldives, LUX * North Male Atoll, Soneva Fushi, VARU by Atmosphere, Jumeirah Vittaveli, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, Oblu Select by Atmosphere at Sangeli and both Four Seasons Resorts.

On 01 August 2020, another 28 Maldives resorts followed – including all the hotels in the Coco Collection, the Six Senses Laamu, the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and the recently completed Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa, which is one of the “Leading Hotels of the World” heard. Another 29 island resorts will be added in September – for example The Nautilus Maldives and Heritance Aarah – and another 46 in October. By the end of October, 94 percent of the resorts in the Maldives will have reopened.

As in many other countries, the easing of the Covid-19 measures has also led to an increase in infections in the Maldives. This is especially true for the capital Malé. Otherwise, active cases were recorded on only nine of the 189 inhabited islands, with an average of one case occurring on each of these islands. There are strict travel restrictions between the islands to limit the spread of the virus. In addition, additional restrictions have been introduced in Malé itself and when traveling from Malé to other islands.

All tourists receive a free 30-day visa upon entry. A negative Covid-19 test is not required – and quarantine after arrival is also not required. However, if visitors show symptoms, a PCR test will be carried out directly at the airport, the costs of which are to be borne by yourself. To enter the country, tourists only need a confirmed booking in a resort in the Maldives. Information on the opening dates of the resorts is available here as a PDF file.
