New in Australia: underwater room on the Great Barrier Reef

The largest coral reef on earth can now be experienced in a completely new way: Cruise Whitsundays has opened the first underwater rooms in Australia on the Great Barrier Reef. They are part of a completely redesigned pontoon on Hardy Reef in the Whitsundays that has just opened.

The 12 by 45 meter large “ReefWorld” is a firmly anchored platform floating on the reef – around 75 kilometers from the mainland. There are two so-called “ReefSuites” with their own bathroom and toilet – with a direct view of the colorful underwater world. The cabins are four meters below the water surface.

Alternatively, holidaymakers can also spend the night on the deck in twelve comfortable “ReefBeds”. It is a firm mattress with a tent. The “ReefWorld” is actually designed for day visitors who want to snorkel or dive right here on the Great Barrier Reef. As soon as you leave the pontoon at 3 p.m., however, there is absolute calm, because the next boat does not arrive until 11 a.m. the next day.

The underwater rooms on the Great Barrier Reef can be booked for around EUR 490 per person per night, the “ReefBeds” for around EUR 320. Included are all meals and drinks, snorkeling trips, tours in the mini submarine and a visit to the underwater observatory, which is part of the platform. The price also includes transfers by boat – either from Airlie Beach or from Daydream and Hamilton Island.
