Thai Airways’ new pop-up restaurant serves in-flight catering in Bangkok

The Thais miss the delicious food on the plane. Thai Airways is convinced of this: at the beginning of September, the airline transformed the dining room of the employees at its headquarters in Bangkok into a pop-up restaurant offering the most popular business and economy class meals.

To create the most authentic atmosphere possible, the room was furnished with real aircraft seats. The tables were built from old engine parts and relics from former airplanes serve as decoration. In addition, guests enter the restaurant in the classic manner via the stairs of a gangway and receive a QR code on their smartphone, which serves as a “boarding pass” and is scanned at the entrance by crew members in uniform.

An Economy Class is available as well as a Business Class. In the cheapest variant, guests can choose from a buffet of portioned food in the classic plastic packaging and take their seats at normal tables. Here you may find for example a Caesar salad with tuna fish around 2.70 euros and chicken in black pepper sauce on rice around 1.75 euros.

Those who choose the Economy or Business Class seats pay 19 or 53 euros for a menu, which is then also served by the airline’s flight attendants in their well-known outfits. The menu includes pasta, chicken tikka and yakisoba, but also local specialties such as roast beef with “Nam Jim Jaew” (a dried chili dip sauce) or the classic rice-noodle dish “Khanom Chin Nam Phrik”.

According to Thai Airways the popularity of the new pop-up restaurant exceeds all expectations: Allegedly, up to 2,000 dishes are sold here on good days. Therefore, there are already plans to open more restaurants at other locations in Thailand later this year. The restaurant in Bangkok is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. Coffee, tea and pastries are available from 7 am.
