Test St. Regis Venice – A dream in a prime location on the Grand Canal

The St. Regis Venice (see here) opened in August 2019. It is the reopening of the former Westin Europa & Regina. It therefore consists of four interconnected buildings with 129 rooms and 40 suites. The hotel has the perfect location in Venice. It is located directly on the Grand Canal overlooking the beautiful Chiesa della Salute: just a five-minute walk from St. Mark’s Square and a two-minute walk from the main shopping street, where shops of all the top fashion brands can be found.

If you want to book the hotel, you can contact us via our contact form here.

The journey to St. Regis Venice

You can travel to Venice y by train or by plane. If you arrive at the airport, we can recommend a private speed boat transfer with a so-called “vaporetto” to St. Regis Venice as a special experience. The cost is EUR 120 (as of November 2019), which is not little, but the experience of the boat trip is simply indescribable in good weather. The vaporettos are actually always designed so that you can stand in the back and enjoy the ride to Venice in the sun. Most of the boats take a route around Venice. But maybe you can convince the driver to drive over the Grand Canal to Venice.

When driving around Venice you approach the hotel from the south and drive past St. Mark’s Square.

The entrance of St. Regis Venice

On arrival, of course, there’d be an employee waiting for you at the entrance of the St. Regis Venice. Together you enter the beautifully designed lobby. If you know Venice hotels, you know that there are the traditional, historical hotels there, which sometimes could do with a renovation, and then occasionally modern ones such as the JW Marriott Venice Resort. The St. Regis Venice combines a history with a classically modern interior. Many colors create a lively, inviting atmosphere.

The entrance hall leads past the salon to the lobby. The salon is always decorated with numerous fresh flowers.

Alternatively, you can of course come from the city on foot to enter the St. Regis Venice. It will look like that.

Room categories of St. Regis Venice

The St. Regis Venice is not limited in room categories. there are 12 different room types available to book, but in reality it is much more. In addition, even rooms of the same category usually do not look completely the same. Highly recommended is a Terrace Grand Canal View Room, which is located in the Regina building. In general, the orientation in the hotel due to the four individual buildings sometimes not so easy, if you are new visitor. But diversity also has its charm. It is not a 0-8-15 hotel, but one that can surprise you again and again in different ways: with a beautiful view, a work of art, a stylishly furnished room, etc.

St. Regis Venice Terrace Grand Canal View Room

Our room was on the 4th floor of the Regina building of the St. Regis Venice: Room 4403. The first 4 stands for the building, the second for the floor and there is room 3. When you enter the room, you look directly onto the white bust above the minibar. On the right is the beautifully designed bathroom. On the left you have a workbench, cupboard and toilet.

The room itself is not very big, but very comfortable. Bright colors with many colorful swabs create a very appealingly warm atmosphere. By the way, that’s a big difference to many other rooms at St. Regis Venice. They are all beautifully designed, but the unobstructed view on the “sunny side” gives the room a very special aura.

St. Regis Venice Terrace Grand Canal View Room

The terrace is “only” a small balcony, because the right terraces can be seen with large groups of seats left and right in the adjacent suites, but the bottom line is the view. And he is absolutely “WOW”. You can see the Chiesa della Salute in front of you and the beautifully designed terrace of the St. Regis Venice Gio restaurant flanked by the typical Venice gondolas.

The room is unfortunately not quite “cheap”. So you pay depending on the season around EUR 1,200 per night. But even the “cheapest” rooms in the St. Regis Venice start with the exception of the low season at EUR 600.

Here is a little tip: Venice is a lagoon city and attracts in good weather many mosquitoes. Despite all the excitement for a Terrace View Room, it is easy to forget to close the balcony door. A big mistake.

There are also other variants of this room category that are no less spectacular. This one for example is with a private dining area.

St. Regis Venice Terrace Grand Canal View Suite

Right next to our room was Suite 4405 at the St. Regis Venice. This not only had a large living room, but also a wonderful sitting area on the terrace with a perfect view of the Chiesa della Salute.

Here is the bedroom in the back of the suite. So it does not have that much light. The atmosphere is completely different. The design is very interesting here, because behind the TV wall is a bathtub and left it goes into the bathroom.

St. Regis Venice Grand Deluxe Room

But what does a “standard room” look like at St. Regis Venice? The photos show a Grand Deluxe Room, the second smallest room category. Here is the orientation of the room. Everything was very nice, but no comparison to the rooms in front of to the canal.

The Venetian Suite was a bit disappointing. No appealing structure and no interesting view.

And again it went into a suite with nice orientation and view. The Grand Canal Deluxe Suite of the St. Regis Venice was a bit further back in the Europa building, but it was again much more spacious and attractively designed.

The gym

Small but nice describes the gym best. High-quality equipment from Technogym with a little more focus on cardio than strength.

Breakfast at St. Regis Venice – an absolute highlight

When we arrived in the morning, we did not miss to have breakfast in the sunshine on the terrace of the Gio’s Restaurant in the St. Regis Venice, directly on the Grand Canal, overlooking the Chiesa della Salute. Apart from the fact that the setting outside could hardly be more beautiful, the breakfast was also of the highest quality. We have rarely eaten such delicious omelets. There was a full variety of fruit including some “fancier” fruits like raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, mango etc, especially considering that it was already 1 November. There was also high quality cheese, ham, salami, antipasti, a large selection of bread, many sweet croissants, cakes and much more. In short, everything your heart desires. The price is also steep: If it is not included in the rate, you pay almost EUR 50 per person.

Dinner at Gio’s Restaurant at St. Regis Venice

If the weather cooperates, the setting for a dinner is almost magical, if you sit on the terrace.

But inside it is cozy. The menu offers a good selection of Italian specialties. For a dinner with 2 people including wine you can pay  EUR 250 to EUR 300. That’s a lot. The dishes are delicious and are served attractively. However, I would say that it is only really worthwhile if you can sit outdoors. Because that’s what’s special, what you pay for in particular.

Conclusion of our test of St. Regis Venice

With the reopening of the St. Regis Venice, Marriott was able to add yet another absolute highlight to its already highly attractive Venice portfolio. The hotel impresses with its outstanding location, beautiful classically modern designed rooms as well as an excellent breakfast. The price for everything is certainly high, but that’s true for other top hotels in Venice as well. For a memorable stay at St. Regis Venice we recommend a Terrace Grand Canal View Room.
