No quarantine: Sri Lanka has reopened its borders to tourists

After a break of ten months, Sri Lanka has reopened its borders to foreign tourists. Quarantine is not required after entry. However, a total of three PCR tests are required if the visit lasts up to seven days – and even four tests for a longer stay.

A PCR test must be carried out before arrival. The negative result must be presented at boarding and must not be older than four days. In addition, up to three further tests are required during the stay in Sri Lanka. The first one is done directly upon arrival at the hotel, the second one follows after five to seven days and the third one after ten to 14 days – if your stay exceeds this period.

In addition, all visitors must apply online for an e-visa before entering the country. Proof of a confirmed hotel booking for the first 14 days must be provided. In addition, for USD 12, one must take out an insurance policy that covers all medical costs related to Covid-19 up to a sum of USD 50,000. The two or three PCR tests on site must also be paid for with the visa application.

The stay is possible in one of 55 hotels throughout the country that have been certified as “Safe and Secure Level 1”. However, the holidaymakers’ freedom of movement is restricted during the first two weeks: they are not allowed to come into contact with the population, but they can go on up to three excursions to well-known attractions with an official escort.

Those who test positive during their stay are isolated in their hotel rooms if they are asymptomatic or taken to hospital if they show symptoms. With the reopened borders in Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Airlines has also resumed direct flights between Frankfurt and Colombo after a four-year break, operating twice a week (Monday and Thursday).
