New at Six Senses Laamu: “Blackwater Diving” in the Maldives

As the first premium resort in the Maldives, the Six Senses Laamu now offers its guests “Blackwater Diving”. This incomparable experience with the inhabitants from the depths of the ocean is becoming increasingly popular around the world. Most of the discoveries from such a dive are new, if not all. And with a little luck, there are also living things that are still unknown to science.

“Blackwater Diving” differs from a typical day or night dive in the Maldives. The starting point is the open ocean, with the divers floating in the water with the current. They are led by a series of LED lights. These are attached to a vertical rope, which in turn was attached to a buoy floating on the water surface.

The light attracts sea creatures who otherwise live in the depths of the ocean. These often strange looking microbees start their foraging at night and come up vertically from the depths. The personal encounters with these natural wonders against a deep black background are perfect for underwater shots. Even adventurous divers are taken into a new dimension by these fascinating observations.

“We are very happy to be among the first divers to experience this in the Maldives,” says marine biologist Philippa Roe from Six Senses Laamu. “The sea creatures, which we would normally never meet, follow their food from the depth and darkness, which is attracted to the light. The divers can expect the absolutely unexpected ”.

The dives are accompanied by the “Deep Blue Divers” – the five-star PADI diving center of the Six Senses Laamu. “No Blackwater dive is like the other. Not even in the same place several times at the same time. Everyone has new surprising treasures – for everyone. From the beginner to the most experienced diver, ”emphasizes Sascha Janson, local photo pro at Deep Blue Divers:“ In addition, no special training is necessary. Any diver with good buoyancy skills can participate in this experience. ”

The luxurious eco-resort Six Senses Laamu is the only one in the almost uninhabited Laamu Atoll – 150 kilometers from the equator. The journey from Malé Airport takes around 40 minutes by plane and another 20 minutes by speedboat. 97 Overwater and Beach Villas await guests in an azure lagoon with a white sandy beach, two restaurants, a spa, a glass tower at lofty heights as a wine cellar and an amazing children’s program.
