With the Riffelalp Resort 2222 m, one of the most spectacular luxury hideaways in the Swiss Alps has started its short summer season. This year it lasts until 20 September. The member of the “Leading Hotels of the World” is located at 2,222 metres above sea level opposite the Matterhorn and offers a fantastic view of a breathtaking mountain panorama.
There is much that is unique about this five-star hotel, which was completely renovated in 2017, with its 65 rooms, five suites and two flats – from the highest spa in Europe to the highest outdoor pool on the continent with a water temperature of 35 degrees and a direct view of the Matterhorn. An indoor pool, steam bath and various saunas also await you in the wellness centre.
Hikes with the mountain guide
The “Alexandre” restaurant serves regional and Mediterranean specialities, while the cosy “Al Bosco” with sun terrace is dedicated to the cuisine of the Italian and Swiss Alpine regions – including a “Matterhorn Pizza” created especially for the Riffelalp Resort. The “2’222m” bar and the hotel’s own wine bar round off the culinary offerings.
Included in the accommodation price and unique in Switzerland is the accompaniment by mountain guide Yann Dupertuis: The deputy rescue chief of Zermatt is available to hotel guests three days a week for hikes and mountain and climbing tours. The absolute highlight is the opportunity to climb one of the 38 four-thousand-metre peaks in the region with Yann.
Historic tram leads to the resort
Incidentally, there is no road leading to the Riffelalp Resort – only the famous Gornergrat railway. For the ten metres in altitude between the Riffelalp station and the resort, the historic Riffelalptram is available in summer. It is the highest tram with a federal railway concession and, at 675.31 metres (including reversing loop), is also probably the shortest tram route in the world.
A night in a 30 to 37 square metre double room in the “Matterhorn Classic” category, including breakfast, can be booked at the Riffelalp Resort throughout the summer season for CHF 586 (approx. EUR 534) for two people. There are rooms that are CHF 100 cheaper, but you should treat yourself to the view of the Matterhorn. Free cancellations are possible up to three days before arrival.
