Maldives: Soneva Fushi presents eight superlative water villas

Opened in 1995, Soneva Fushi has been one of the very few luxury resorts in the Maldives without water villas. But that has now changed – and as with the villas on the beach, Soneva Fushi has not spill over, but rather made a big splash: With an area of 584 square meters for one bedroom and 857 square meters for two bedrooms, the eight new “Water Retreats” are among the largest above-water villas in the world.

“Due to the beach villas hidden in the vegetation, the island looks as untouched as it did on the first day. When it came to building new villas, we wanted to reserve the beach for our guests and the turtles – so we built over the sea. Experts inspected the proposed location to make sure there were no corals in the area,” says creative director Eva Malmstrom Shivdasani.

The “Water Retreats” can be booked either with a view of the sunrise or the sunset. They all have a large al fresco deck with sun loungers, a sunken seating area and catamaran nets directly above the water. In addition to a private pool, the iconic blue water slide, which adorns many of the water villas in the sister resort Soneva Jani, is a must: From the top floor, the curved 19-meter slide leads directly into the sea.

Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the spacious dining and living area on the upper floor with natural light, while the pantry with wine fridge and mini-bar offers fine gourmet snacks and drinks. The master bedroom with king-size bed is flanked by a bathroom, a dressing room and a children’s sleeping area.

A color palette of light blue, green and soft beige tones was chosen for the interior. The furnishings remain true to the rustic driftwood look for which the Soneva Fushi is renowned. It can also be found in the resort’s new beach villas, completed in 2019, about which we have already reported in detail here (Villa 37) and here (Villa 38 and 43).

The Soneva Fushi is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Baa Atoll. An open-air cinema and a Hightech-Observatorium are part of the luxury resort. Although the experiences are magical, the philosophy remains simple: “No news, no shoes”. Prices for the new “Water Retreats” start at EUR 2,242 per night for one bedroom and EUR 4,468 for two bedrooms.
