Lufthansa Group decides on the first restructuring package

Lufthansa released the restructuring package for the Lufthansa Group on Tuesday afternoon. This involves Germanwings on one hand and the fleet on the other.

Lufthansa is decommissioning six Airbus A380s, seven Airbus A340-600s and seven Boeing 747-400s from its long-haul fleet. Three Lufthansa A340-300s from Lufthansa Cityline will also be taken out of operation. Some of the planes had already been considered for decommissioning, which is now preferred over time. The six Airbus A380s were scheduled to leave the fleet in 2022. The short and medium-haul routes will also be affected by this restructuring.

This package also affects employees, even if the Group tries to keep existing employees at best.

In a statement by Austrian Airlines on Twitter, the airline says that it expects a decline of 50 to 75 percent in the summer business in 2020. Furthermore, she predicts that the Lufthansa Group will probably not be back to pre-crisis levels until 2023.

The Austrian Federal Government announced that, due to the coronavirus, complete freedom to travel cannot be expected to come back soon. Austrian Airlines currently assumes that it will have 25-50% of the demand in summer 2020 compared to 2019. pic.twitter.com/8tj5PvoeFw
