Airport in Doha receives a tropical indoor garden

Hamad International Airport in Doha has presented its plans for its second expansion phase. The highlight of the project will be a spectacular 10,000 square meter indoor tropical garden in a central entrance hall with a huge, column-free lattice shell roof. A specially developed functional glass is to filter the light so that the plants, which come from sustainable forests all over the world, find optimal conditions.

In addition to the tropical garden, 11,720 square meters of sales and restaurant space, a first-class art collection, a 268 square meter water feature and a 9,000 square meter Al Mourjan Lounge with a view of the garden are planned. A new transfer area will help to further reduce transfer times.

The expansion of the five-star airport is divided into two phases: The first phase comprises a central entrance hall with additional gates for nine wide-body aircraft and the connection of Halls D and E. It is scheduled to start in early 2020 and increase the airport’s capacity from currently 34 million to more than 53 million passengers per year by 2022.

Phase 2 will see the expansion of Halls D and E, increasing capacity to more than 60 million passengers per year. It will be completed after 2022. Hamad International Airport in Doha opened in 2014 and was named the fourth-best airport in the world at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2019.
